In June 2022, PESS hosted a delegation from Stellenbosch University (SU), South Africa in the first phase of a collaborative research project focussed on coaching and coach development. This extends the long-established relationship between SU and UL, in particular the PESS department stretching back almost 20years. In the last two years, the coaching project has received over €20,000 from the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility Fund. The funding was used to support strategic mobility of experts in the field, enhance teaching contribution in SU and UL and undertake novel research on, among other things, coach-athlete interactions in training and competition.
Phase two of the project saw Dr. Ian Sherwin, Course Director BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences, travel to SU to undertake a 12-day visit in March 2023 for teaching and research with colleagues from Maties Sport and the department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine.
