What is your current role?
I work as a sport psychology consultant, having recently set up my own consultancy: Tim Marron Sport Psychology. I am currently undertaking a role with Dolphin RFC and work with various individual athletes across multiple sports, including athletics, soccer, golf, boxing, rowing, and GAA. Over the past 2 years, I have also worked with Sligo LGFA, Clonakilty GAA, Dohenys GAA and completed a sport psychology internship with a New York based company SportStrata.
What skills or knowledge did you learn throughout the MSc SEPP programme that you find most useful in your current role?
- Research skills - The ability to stay in touch with the latest research and critically consume; it allows me to incorporate the latest findings into my work with athletes.
- Presentation skills - I am regularly required to deliver group presentations in my role and my MSc exposed me to this.
- Knowledge of sport psychology basics - I regularly use Mental Skills Training with my clients. My MSc gave me a good grounding in this, giving me a good place to start as well as giving me a strong theoretical understanding of key athlete experiences such as injury and retirement.
- Ethical awareness - I always ensure that my work has a strong foundation in professional ethics and I often revert to what I learned in my MSc when dealing with ethical dilemmas.
What was your favourite module and why?
Professional Issues and Ethics – I felt it was the most applicable to the path I wanted to take following completing the course. It allowed us to create solutions for real-world scenarios. The discussions allowed us to get different perspectives, from peers and lecturers.
What advice do you have for students considering applying to this programme?
- Ensure you are aware of what career path you want to take following completing this course. There are further steps to take to qualify to deliver sport psychology support.
- Be aware that there’s lots of work to do for this course and it can be difficult to manage if you are working full-time/part-time.
- Get in touch with graduates and lecturers before applying so you know what to expect.
- Just like anything, you get out of it what you put into it!
