Research Impact: Periodization is often advocated as the optimal planning method in coaching literature and education. Notably, Tudor Bompa, a leading expert, emphasizes its necessity, asserting “we either have periodization or chaos!” In this study, coaches were surveyed on core training planning concepts. Results revealed significant disparities between coaches’ views and key periodization principles, even among self-identified users. Surprisingly, just over a third of periodization users agreed with fundamental concepts. These findings suggest that many who claim to follow periodization may actually adopt modern planning practices rather than strictly adhering to periodization guidelines. Thus, while periodization dominates literature, its principles lack universal adherence and widespread acceptance.
