Community-Based Structured Exercise Classes at University of Limerick and Moyross Community Hub Leading a physically active lifestyle improves your physical and mental health and your ability to take part in everyday activities. Regular exercise keeps your body healthy. What is ULMedX? ULMedX is a research project that provides an opportunity to take part in exercise classes in a safe, friendly and supportive environment with a low staff to participant ratio. You will have the opportunity to exercise regularly with others. Who is ULMedX for? It is suitable for most people with Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes. How often are the classes? You will be encouraged to exercise twice a week with us, and also on your own at home. What will you get from ULMedX? You can be sure you are in safe and knowledgeable hands with our qualified and experienced staff. · Class duration is 60 minutes. · Circuit based format (doing different exercises at each station) · Maintain and improve your aerobic capacity (exercises to improve your heart and circulation) and your overall strength. · Some use of exercise machines. · An opportunity to chat and have tea/coffee with fellow participants, staff and student volunteers. How will I know if I am doing enough or too much exercise? All exercises will be carefully explained to you by ULMedX staff. You will be encouraged to increase your exercise gradually and will be given an opportunity to learn what level of effort is appropriate for you. When are the classes? Tuesday and Thursday 10.00 – 11.00 a.m. UL Sport Arena, €5 per class Wednesday and Friday 11.00 – 12.00 Moyross Community Hub, €3 per class Classes will run for a period of 12-weeks, starting in April. What do I need to bring? Appropriate shoes for exercising Comfortable exercise clothes Water to drink and Towel Medications (if needed) Induction Session All new participants must complete the free induction session. This will involve introducing you to the facilities and the research, a baseline assessment and an opportunity to meet our staff and ask questions. How do I apply? Daire Fitzmaurice is a PhD student in Physical Activity for Health, in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, UL. She is supervised by Prof. Brian Carson, Prof. Matthew Herring and Prof. Catherine Woods. She is in the second year of her PhD on the ULMedX project: an exercise referral scheme for people with a chronic illness. Daire holds a MSc. In Clinical Exercise Physiology from Liverpool John Moores University (2019-2020) and a BSc. In Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Limerick (2015-2019).
