Graduates return to share their perspectives with coaches on the MSc Applied Sports Coaching, UL.

Being both Coach and Parent

In Ireland, in particular with its emphasis on volunteerism, athletes are frequently coached by their parents. We were delighted to welcome back graduates of the MSc Applied Sports Coaching programme, Owen Connolly and David Royle to deliver a session on the parent/coach-child/athlete relationship to our current students.

Owen completed his thesis on the topic and had interviewed David about his experience coaching his daughter from junior athlete to representing Ireland in (Shotokan) Karate.

The discussion took place as part of our summer module on Athlete and Coach Development which covers the pathways and transitions in sport from both the athletes’ and coaches’ perspectives.

Where can coaches learn more about the parent-coach/child-athlete relationship?

Working with Parents in Sport have created a short book Two Hats which provides guidance for anyone coaching their child in sport: https://www.parentsinsport.co.uk/product/two-hats/.

The student perspective: John Barry (S&C & GAA Coach)
