A PESS research team recently concluded an exciting collaboration with Paralympics Ireland, delivering the most comprehensive examination to date of the experiences of Irish Para sport athletes and coaches.
The mixed-methods study, funded by Paralympics Ireland, included a national survey of Para sport athletes and interviews with Para sport athletes and coaches. This research provides valuable insights into the gateways, pathways, barriers, and outcomes associated with Para sport participation in Ireland. The findings will serve as a critical tool for Paralympics Ireland as they shape their new strategy and advocate for the continued growth and support of Para sport across the country.
The research team consisted of Seán Healy, Elaine Murtagh, Phil Kearney, Ian Sherwin, and Frank Nugent, with Alan Dineen playing a key role as research assistant.
This project marks just the beginning of a growing partnership between our Department and Paralympics Ireland. Future collaborations are already in motion, with Alan Dineen having recently joined the PESS department as a PhD student to further advance the study of Para sport.
Stay tuned for more updates on this research and our ongoing efforts to enhance inclusion and accessibility in sport!
