Why did you choose to study the course?

I chose to study PE and Irish at the University of Limerick for a few reasons. I knew I wanted to be a PE teacher and because of my involvement with rowing, I was keen to further my rowing career throughout university. I visited UL campus during the open day and knew it was the right fit for me! I was really impressed with the sporting facilities on campus and the PESS department were very welcoming. Ultimately, I was drawn to the practical nature of the PE course and the opportunities that came with the university experience. There are so many clubs and societies that I felt I would definitely fit in at UL.

What do you like about the course?

I love the balance between the practical and academic sides of the course. Everything that we study links directly to the classroom. The practical classes have been crucial in my development as a student teacher. I have found it is much easier to teach a topic when you have experienced it in a classroom setting already. There is also the added bonus of experiencing all of this with your friends! It has been really enjoyable learning how to teach dance and aquatics with my friends. We are such a close-knit group because of how hands-on the course is, which has made it much easier to get through the harder assignments and exams! There is so much to like about this course but above all, the people I have met are friends for life!

What skills have you gained from this course?

The skills I have gained during my PE degree are endless. There are so many opportunities for personal growth and development. I have pushed myself outside of my comfort zone during outdoor adventure, dance and gymnastics modules. I have also learned how to give and take feedback effectively, which has been impactful in all aspects of my life. I have gained an appreciation for the importance of physical activity for all, at every stage in life which has encouraged me to become an advocate for all students in PE. My confidence has grown tenfold since I started in UL and this course has opened so many doors for me; from working with young people with additional needs to researching really interesting topics.

Who would you recommend this course to?

I would recommend this course to anyone with a passion for physical activity and education. There are endless opportunities to explore your own passion for sport and physical activity and learn about sports you didn’t even know existed! If you enjoy physical activity and want to develop your understanding of teaching physical education, this is the best place to start!
