Silenced and stressed: impact of reporting workplace bullying and harassment for academic staff in Irish higher education

The study Silenced and stressed: impact of reporting workplace bullying and harassment for academic staff in Irish higher education exposes the profound consequences of reporting workplace bullying and harassment in Irish higher education. Drawing on lived experiences, it reveals how institutional barriers—such as HR inaction, management retaliation, and job insecurity—silence victims and perpetuate toxic cultures. The findings highlight significant psychological, career, and organisational impacts, including staff turnover and diminished trust in reporting systems. This research calls for urgent reform in HRM practices, leadership accountability, and policy implementation to protect academic staff and foster healthier, more respectful work environments.
