Why do you start your session like that? – phil kearney.

PESS staff member Phil Kearney was recently featured on the Rugby Coach Weekly podcast.

Host Dan Cottrell wrote on LinkedIn: “Too often, our sessions become about rehearsing movements in isolation rather than helping players read, feel, and adapt to what is actually happening in front of them. As Phil explains, there is no perfect technical template. What matters is understanding the idea of the movement and then experiencing it across varied, realistic situations.”

Phil discussed:

  1. Knowing what a drill is being used for and when that drill has done its job.
  2. Effective options for how to start a session.
  3. Encouraging peer coaching within a group of players.

Together with colleague Ian Sherwin, Phil has previously contributed an article to Rugby Coach Weekly magazine on the TACTful model for providing feedback.
