I am honoured to take up the role of Course Director for the BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences programme at the University of Limerick. In this role, my focus is on supporting teaching and learning, helping students make the most of their studies, and ensuring the programme continues to provide a high-quality and engaging experience for everyone.
The Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS) has a long and proud history in sport and exercise education in Ireland. Its origins trace back to the National College of Physical Education, founded in 1971 to train physical education teachers. The department later became Thomond College of Education before joining the University of Limerick in 1991. Today, PESS is recognised as a beacon within UL, a leader in sport and exercise science education that combines scientific knowledge with practical skill development, setting a benchmark for excellence across the university.
As Course Director, my focus is on the BSc programme and the students who study within it. I work closely with the teaching team to ensure the curriculum is cohesive, well-structured, and engaging. I also provide guidance and support to students, helping them navigate their modules, assessments, and progression through the degree. My goal is to make sure students feel supported, informed, and able to achieve their full potential.
The BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences programme equips students with a solid scientific foundation alongside practical experience. Practical classes, group projects, and placements in real-world sport and exercise settings are central to the degree. My role is to help coordinate these opportunities, so they are meaningful, accessible, and aligned with the learning outcomes, while maintaining the high academic standards that define the programme.
I bring a background in physiology, skeletal muscle metabolism, and exercise adaptation. This expertise informs the teaching and support I provide, helping students understand the science behind performance and exercise, and how these concepts can be applied in practical settings. As a teacher, I aim to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and confidence, and to support students as they translate their learning into both academic and professional contexts.
Supporting students also means promoting a sense of community and belonging. University life comes with its challenges, and part of my role is to ensure students know where to find guidance and support. I work closely with colleagues across the programme and the wider department to ensure every student has access to the resources they need to thrive.
I am excited to work with students and staff to continue building a rewarding, challenging, and supportive environment on the BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences programme. With its rich history, dedicated teaching team, and leadership within the university, the programme provides an exceptional foundation for students. I look forward to supporting students throughout their journey at UL, helping them achieve their goals while contributing to a vibrant and dynamic academic community.
