Summer Micro‑credentials in Physical Education at PESS – Ursula Freyne.

As schools and communities increasingly recognise the power of movement, creativity, and inclusive physical activity, educators are seeking new ways to expand their expertise. For those working in or preparing to enter the world of Physical Education, here in PESS we are offering two exciting, part‑time micro‑credentials that will begin in May.

These NFQ Level 8 modules provide focused, practical learning designed to strengthen teaching skills and broaden professional pathways, all while fitting around the busy lives of working educators or those still in education.

Whether your passion lies in expressive movement or competitive games, these short, impactful courses offer hands‑on experience, flexible online learning, and recognised qualifications that can contribute toward future study. Here’s a closer look at what each module offers—and how they could support your professional growth.

PY4173 – Aesthetic and Expressive

Duration: 18 May – 19 June 2026
Award: Certificate of Completion
Compulsory On‑Campus Week: 18–21 May
Fees: €750 (EU) / €1500 (Non‑EU)
Application Deadline: 13 April 2026

Physical Education is about far more than sport. Movement forms such as dance, gymnastics, and expressive activities play a crucial role in helping learners develop body awareness, confidence, creativity, and social connection. PY4173 is a 6‑week micro‑credential designed for those preparing to teach PE and seeking to fulfil key curriculum requirements in aesthetic and expressive learning.

This module explores how to design, deliver, and adapt activities that are safe, inclusive, and engaging for a wide variety of learners. Through a blend of online study and a compulsory on‑campus practical week, participants build both their own physical literacy and their confidence in facilitating expressive movement experiences.

Students will examine curriculum models, performance evaluation approaches, and digital tools that support learning. They’ll be encouraged to reflect critically on their own teaching philosophy, cultural responsiveness, and physical literacy as they engage with creative movement tasks.

This course is ideal for those who want to enrich their ability to teach dance, gymnastics, and expressive activities—areas often overlooked yet deeply impactful in the modern PE curriculum. And because it’s designed for part‑time learners, the online format includes evening or recorded lectures, flexible study time, and clear guidance for assessments.

PY4213 – Competitive, Team and Individual Based Activities

Duration: 25 May – 26 June 2026
Award: University Certificate of Study
Compulsory On‑Campus Week: 25–28 May
Fees: €750 (EU) / €1500 (Non‑EU)
Application Deadline: 13 April 2026

Competitive games form the backbone of many PE programmes, teaching students tactical awareness, teamwork, resilience, and strategic thinking. PY4213 focuses on building strong pedagogical and practical skills for teaching games in inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate ways.

One of the central themes of this module is Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU), a widely respected curriculum model that helps learners grasp tactics and concepts rather than simply practising isolated skills. Through this model and others, participants will investigate how to design effective learning experiences across both team‑based and individual games.

The balance of online learning and a concentrated on‑campus practical week offers valuable hands‑on experience. Students engage directly with principles of play, tactical decision‑making, and skill development, learning how to adjust activities to meet the needs of diverse learners. Like PY4173, this module is built with part‑time and working professionals in mind, offering flexible delivery alongside the compulsory practical component.

  • Coaches, youth workers, or community educators looking to deepen their knowledge
  • Professionals considering future postgraduate study

Why Choose a Micro‑Credential

Micro‑credentials offer a powerful combination of flexibility, practicality, and recognition. In just six weeks, participants gain:

  • Targeted expertise
  • Hands-on experience during compulsory practical weeks
  • A recognised Level 8 qualification
  • A pathway toward larger academic awards

Best of all, these modules are crafted for real‑world professionals—balancing online learning with practical immersion, and offering timetables that support work, family, and other commitments.
