Research Impact: This paper provides a detailed analysis of six questionnaires used to assess motivation in sport. As well as reliability and validity information being summarised and evaluated, questionnaires are analysed according to impact. Specifically, citation and journal data are used to assess the questionnaires, providing a distinction between questionnaires that are highly cited in any journal versus those that are highly cited in a high-impact journal. The findings are useful for researchers and practitioners alike, as they provide guidance regarding which questionnaire to use when measuring “the why of behaviour” among sportspeople.
