Research Impact : This paper encourages the reader to consider the role of optimism in how, through nurturing, collegiality, networking and life-long learning, we can continue to advocate for, and invest support in, the field of sport pedagogy. The paper denotes my optimism for the field of sport pedagogy as a community of scholars and associated meaningful, relevant and worthwhile sport pedagogy research. That is not to deny that there is a need for the field to examine how best to encourage sport pedagogy colleagues to identify what knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to develop, and continue to up-skill, as self-reliant learners.
