Become a Fitness Professional – National Council for Exercise & Fitness

The National Council for Exercise & Fitness (NCEF) is an academic affiliate of the University of Limerick, offering the only university accredited Health/Fitness Professional Instructor qualifications in Ireland. Certificate, Higher Certificate, Diploma & Degree qualifications are awarded at Levels 6,7 & 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) and at Levels 5 & 6 on the European Qualifications Framework (EQF). The NCEF is audited and aligned to the European Industry standard, Exercise for Health Specialist (SQF Level 5).

The Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness (CEHF), Level 6 is offered to PE and Sport Sciences (PESS) students and graduates over an intensive period in May each year.  The CEHF affords these individuals with an opportunity to gain additional skills and competencies to work as fitness instructor whilst in college or after.

CEHF graduates are educated & trained to give instruction in Circuit training and HITT type training, Body Conditioning, Step Training, Strength Training, Exercise to Music, Group Fitness Assessment and supervise and instruct on the gym floor and exercise studio.  Individuals will also have the skills and knowledge to deliver one to one training by conducting appropriate fitness assessments and designing safe and effective exercise programmes to the general public (adults 18yrs+) based on their individual needs, whether it be strength training, weight loss, training for an endurance event or general fitness.

Further opportunities to specialise in areas such as Advanced Personal Training, Pilates & Corrective Exercise, Strength & Conditioning for Sport etc. are available.  Graduates can progress on a flexible learning pathway to, Diploma in Exercise & Health Fitness (DEHF), Level 7 and finally the B.Sc. in Exercise & Health Fitness, Level 8.
