Research Impact Summary: This paper explores the construction of the Leaving Certificate Physical Education (LCPE) specification and specifically, the influence of roles and power-ratios within the group (Physical Education Development Group – PEDG) responsible for such construction. 10 of the PEDG members were interviewed. By drawing on figurational sociology concepts, we can better understand why members’ roles had very little influence on the curriculum development process and why unbalanced power-ratios within the group had particular unintended consequences. This paper ends with considerations which can be applied to the curriculum development process of any school subject.
