Publication: Evaluation of a brief interval exercise training (IET) intervention for first-time prisoners with elevated anxiety symptoms

Research Impact:  Exercise training could be an effective coping strategy for increased anxiety symptoms in response to first time incarceration, but this has been unstudied.  Thus, 37 first-time French prisoners were randomised to three weekly sessions of moderate-to-vigorous intensity interval exercise or a wait-list. Compared to control, exercise training significantly reduced anxiety by a moderate-to-large, potentially clinically meaningful magnitude (d=0.71) based on a minimally important difference of 0.5SD.  Findings supported that interval exercise training may be an effective coping strategy to deal with elevated anxiety in response to incarceration.
