Publication: Strength and Conditioning for Competitive Rowers

Research Impact:  Strength and conditioning (S&C) is an essential component of performance enhancement and injury reduction for competitive rowers.  However, information regarding the practical application of appropriate S&C programming for competitive rowers is limited. This article provides an evidence-based needs analysis of the biomechanics, physiology, and injury epidemiology associated with the sport of rowing. Based on this, the authors suggest that strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches should aim to develop strength and power, build robustness, and increase mobility and/or flexibility, where applicable, to decrease likelihood of injury and enhance rowing performance. Examples of gym-based tests and S&C programs for competitive rowers are provided in this article.
