The University of Limerick (UL), Ireland, offers an extensive range of postgraduate opportunities across four faculties including part-time and flexible learning programmes, structured PhD programmes, professional doctorates, post-doctorates, taught and research Master’s programmes.  

The Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS) department is a vibrant and rapidly growing department in the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences at the University of Limerick. PESS was the highest ranked Department in UL in the recently published 2022 QS World University Rankings for ‘Sport-Related Subjects’ and is currently the only department in the top 100 (51-100). This comes on the back of our top 50 (48th) in the 2021 Shanghai Global Ranking for ‘Sport Science Departments/Schools’.

The Department has a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Physical Education (PE), Sport & Exercise Sciences (SES), Exercise and Health Fitness Management, Sports Performance, Applied Sports Coaching and Sport Psychology as well as a recently established Professional Doctorate in Human Performance and Innovation.  The department’s strengths lie in the expertise of its staff, the quality of its academic programmes, high quality teaching spaces and the applied nature and relevance of these programmes.

The PESS department delivers four MSc Programmes and a Professional Doctorate:

Staff within the PESS Department has been involved in the initiation and development of a number of research centres and units and the MSc programmes are underpinned by cutting-edge research in these fields. The department has strategic and research links with a number of key organisations such as Sport Ireland, the Gaelic Athletic Association, Swim Ireland, the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), Munster Rugby, and Limerick Sports Partnership to name some. These links are integral to the delivery of the MSc programmes.
