Publication: Visual exploratory activity and practice design: Perceptions of experienced coaches in professional football academies

Research Impact: Visual exploratory activity (VEA), or scanning, refers to head and/or body movements made by a player prior to receiving the ball with the aim of picking up information to guide future actions – you can see an example here. Extensive research has demonstrated the value of developing VEA1,2,3. This study evaluated the practice activities designed by experienced coaches to develop VEA. The results should provide a useful stimulus to coaches reflecting on the activities they use to develop VEA. In addition, the results highlight a number of areas where additional research is required so as to ensure an adequate evidence-base for practice.
