Publication: Effects of exercise on cognitive functioning in adults with serious mental illness: A meta-analytic review

Research Impact Summary: These random-effects meta-analyses estimated the population effects of exercise on cognitive outcomes/domains across 15 randomized controlled trials of 899 participants (~43% female) with Severe Mental Illness. In the overall sample, exercise resulted in large magnitude improvements in reasoning and problem solving, and small magnitude improvements in executive function. Among people with Depression, exercise elicited large and moderate magnitude improvements in processing speed and executive function, respectively; among people with Schizophrenia, exercise elicited large magnitude improvements in reasoning and problem solving. Findings support integrating exercise into therapeutic paradigms to enhance frequently impaired cognitive outcomes among adults with Severe Mental Illness.
