Publication: Dose-response effects of acute exercise intensity on state anxiety among women with depression

Research Impact: This secondary analysis investigated potentially optimal acute exercise intensity for reducing state anxiety, the duration of response, and potential influences of depression severity and preferred-intensity exercise. Twenty-four women with MDD who completed five separate sessions, including 20-min of cycling at prescribed light, moderate, or hard intensities, a preferred-intensity session, or quiet rest. Compared to quiet rest, moderate-intensity elicited moderate anxiety reductions at 10-min-post (g=0.59) and 30-min-post (g=0.61); prescribed moderate-intensity elicited greater reductions than preferred at 30-min-post (g=0.43). Steady-state prescribed moderate exercise reduces anxiety among women with MDD for at least 30min following exercise, regardless of depression severity.
