Positive impacts of gaming on cognition – professor mark campbell.

“…if you are hoping your children will become surgeons or air traffic controllers, then let them play video games”

Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, brings together expert software teams from universities and institutes of technology across Ireland in a co-ordinated centre of research excellence with a strong industry focus.

Lero established Europe’s first esports science research lab in 2016. The lab is headed up by Professor Mark Campbell from the PESS Department and consists of a multidisciplinary team of researchers investigating a range of topics relating to health, wellbeing and human performance.

Mark was recently invited onto RTÉ Drivetime to discuss recent research examining the relationship between playing video games, attention and memory.

The aim of the Lero Esports Science Research Lab is to explore and identify key factors that influence performance related to gaming success by capturing behavioural, physiological and performance data during the play sessions of professional and amateur gamers. This data comes from video-capture of players, instrumentation of games/gaming devices, and obtaining psycho-physiological measurements like the electrical impulses occurring in the brain, eye fixation, sensory perception thresholds, pressure imposed on interaction devices and pupil dilation.

Professor Mark Campbell is a Professor of Sport and Performance Psychology in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, UL and a Director of the Lero Esports Science Research Lab.
