Publication: Are Gender Stereotypes Still Prevalent in Physical Education? Spanish Teachers’ and Students’ Beliefs and Attitudes Toward Gender Equity

Research Impact: Grounded in doing gender theory, this paper explores the beliefs and attitudes of physical education teachers and students toward gender equity in physical education and sports, as well as identifies aspects to be addressed. The study involved 90 physical education teachers and 644 secondary school students and used random sampling by multistage clusters. The findings suggest that most students and teachers demonstrated equitable beliefs and attitudes at a sociocultural level. However, teachers’ age and self-identified sex/gender, and the self-identified sex/gender of students, played a significant role in the stereotypes. There was a noticeable disparity between teachers’ results and students’ perceptions. The study highlights the importance of implementing critical feminist curricular approaches, especially with preservice teachers and focusing on addressing masculinities. Overall, the paper emphasizes the relevance of these studies in understanding reality and developing culturally relevant and context-specific pedagogical approaches.
