“Impact on the ground” is a phrase often heard in conversations about research. The ARISE project (Activity and Recreation in an Inclusive Sensory Environment) aims to realise this ambition in a very tangible way. Through interviews and co-design workshops with end-users, the project team is developing design plans for a new public recreation space in Mungret, Limerick.
The ARISE Project was developed in response to a persistent challenge: many people with disabilities and many older adults experience low levels of physical activity, in part because outdoor spaces are not always designed to be welcoming, accessible, or inclusive. By working directly with those who will use the space, the project seeks to ensure that the newly developed outdoor space reflects the real needs, preferences, and experiences of the community.
The project is funded through a University of Limerick Citizens’ Assembly award. The UL Citizens’ Assembly is an initiative that brings together researchers, community members, and organisations to deliberate on societal issues and to support collaborative research projects that respond to priorities identified by the community.
ARISE is an interdisciplinary initiative that brings together expertise from health, physical activity, design, and community organisations, alongside the voices of people who will ultimately use the space. The team is led by Dr Michelle O’Donoghue (School of Allied Health) and includes members from across UL and the community, with Professor Rose Galvin (School of Allied Health, UL), Michaela Downey (Parent), Lara Grufferty (Dóchas Midwest Autism Support), Dr Cristiano Storni (Computer Science and Information Systems, UL), Tanya McGarry (School of Allied Health, UL), Cyril Killeen (Dóchas Midwest Autism Support), and Dr Sean Healy (Physical Education and Sport Sciences, UL).
The project is being delivered in partnership with Dóchas Midwest Autism Support, the Autism@UL Special Interest Group, the UL Age Friendly Committee, and Limerick City and County Council, who have identified the site for the development of this inclusive recreation space. Together, these partners are working to create an outdoor environment that supports participation, wellbeing, and connection for a diverse range of community members.
