Research Impact: The topic of personal epistemology – beliefs about the nature of knowledge and knowing – might sound far removed from sports coaching, but we think it’s an important foundation. Why? Because your actions as a coach are anchored to your beliefs. If we want to change a coach’s behaviours, we need to first understand their beliefs and where those beliefs come from. In this study, we explored the concept of personal epistemology with coach developers. To do this we used narrative pedagogy, an approach to learning grounded in the structured exploration of stories. We found that personal epistemology can act as a stimulus for connection, meaning making, new ideas and change. And we reflect on the potential of narrative pedagogy to engage coach developers with complex and challenging content.
