New publication from Sport & Human Performance Research Centre members Paul Kinnerk and Phil Kearney, in collaboration with Carmen Barquero-Ruiz (Universidad de Murcia) and Alex Inglethorpe (Academy Director, Liverpool Football Club): Game-Based Approaches in Football Academy Coaching: Designing Environments for Decision-Making, Skill, and Understanding.
The chapter argues that GBAs offer a coherent, player-centred way to develop footballers who are skilful, adaptable, and tactically intelligent. Rooted in constructivist theory, GBAs integrate curriculum design, session sequencing, purposeful task construction, and effective coach instruction to create environments where understanding is built through interaction with the game. In academy settings, GBAs are not an optional extra but a deliberate choice to align coaching with the long-term goal of developing independent, decision-making players. As shown in this chapter, success with GBAs requires more than playing games; it demands careful curriculum planning, connected sequencing, task designs that balance representativeness and challenge, and the use of instruction, including questioning, cues, and guided feedback, to deepen understanding.
