This semester, we had the opportunity to take part in the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), Models-Based Practice: Towards Viable, Diverse and High-Quality Physical Education in Europe. The programme brought together students and lecturers from the University of Limerick, the University of Murcia, and the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, giving us the chance to learn from different perspectives and build international connections.
Before travelling to Spain, we completed six weeks of online learning alongside our regular studies. These evening sessions introduced us to a range of curriculum models, including Personal and Social Responsibility, Self-Construction of Materials, Adventure Education, Health-Related Physical Education, Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) and Sport Education. Working with students from Norway and Spain throughout the online phase helped create strong relationships before we even arrived in Murcia.
The highlight of the programme was attending lectures and practical labs at the University of Murcia, where we explored the models in greater depth and experienced them first-hand. One of the most rewarding parts of the week was delivering teaching episodes in a local bilingual school. Although there was a language barrier at times, the students were incredibly welcoming, enthusiastic and eager to participate. Teaching in an international setting challenged us to think creatively and adapt our communication, making it an invaluable experience as pre-service teachers.
Outside of the university, we had the opportunity to kayak and snorkel in the beautiful waters of Cabo de Palos, visit the historic city of Cartagena, and immerse ourselves in Spanish culture. In our free time, we enjoyed local cuisine, spent an evening at a waterpark, and experienced the vibrant atmosphere of Murcia’s nightlife.
The BIP was much more than an academic programme. It gave us the chance to grow as future teachers, develop intercultural awareness and build friendships with students from across Europe. It is an experience that we will remember throughout our teaching career and one that has strengthened our confidence as educators.
