A WARM WELCOME TO STUDENTS AND STAFF IN PESS FOR THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR – DR JOHN PERRY.

Dear Students and Colleagues,

As we begin the new academic year, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our students and staff within the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS). A particular welcome to our new students as you begin your time at UL.

University offers opportunities to learn, challenge yourself, and discover what interests you. Alongside your studies, I encourage you to really embrace student life. Join a club or society, try something you have never done before, get involved, and say hello to the person sitting beside you. Some of the people you meet in these first weeks may become friends for life, and the experiences you share may be among your favourite memories of university.

Make time for that side of being a student. The conversation after a lecture, a coffee with classmates, or the decision to go along to something new can be the beginning of a friendship or a lasting interest. I hope you leave UL with a qualification you are proud of, a stronger sense of who you are, and people you will stay close to long after graduation.

Starting university can also feel daunting, and finding your feet takes time. You do not need to have everything figured out in your first week. Ask questions, reach out when you need support, and look out for one another. We want everyone to feel that they belong here.

To our returning students, welcome back. I wish you every success in your studies, placements, research, and sporting pursuits, and hope you will help our newest students feel at home.

To our staff, thank you for your continued hard work, professionalism, and support of our students and colleagues. Your commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service is fundamental to the success of PESS and greatly appreciated.

As a department, we take great pride in fostering an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative environment where everyone can thrive. I look forward to working together throughout the year and celebrating the many achievements that will undoubtedly come our way.

I wish you all a rewarding, enjoyable, and successful 2026/27 academic year. I look forward to sharing it with you.

With best wishes,

John Perry

Head of Department.
