CAN MORE ‘COMPETITION ENGINEERING’ IMPORVE GAELIC FOOTBALL RULES? – LUKE BARRETT & PHIL KEARNEY.

PESS staff member Dr Phil Kearney and MSc Applied Sports Coaching graduate Luke Barrett recently had an article published on RTÉ Brainstorm: Can more ‘competition engineering’ improve Gaelic football rules?

They discussed:

• The importance of the deliberate redesign of a sport’s rules, format or equipment to produce a better version of the game, whether that’s safer, fairer, more skilful or more exciting to play and watch (known as competition engineering).
• How a clear definition of skill and skill acquisition can act to guide rule changes/competition engineering.
• How the best rule modifications pose better questions for the players on the pitch to answer, rather than restricting the answers they’re allowed to give.

Dr. Phil Kearney is the Course Leader for the MSc Applied Sports Coaching at the University of Limerick. A Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, his teaching and research centres on the domain of skill acquisition, particularly as it relates to youth sport. A regular contributor to RTÉ Brainstorm, Phil is a member of the Gaelic Athletic Association’s Player & Coach Development Advisory Group, an Associate Editor for Perceptual and Motor Skills and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Motor Learning and Development. Phil is a co-founder of Movement and Skill Acquisition Ireland
