Survey: Supplement Use in Inter-county GAA Athletes

Final Year Research Project
Supplement Use in Inter-county GAA Athletes – Athlete Survey

Our names are Keela Spillane and Cian Maher and we are 4th Year Students in the SES programme in UL. Currently, we are undertaking our FYP with our supervisor Dr. Catherine Norton.

W we are specifically investigating sport and nutritional supplement use among Inter-county Gaelic Footballers and Hurlers. The aim of this questionnaire is to learn more about supplement consumption. This includes supplement type, timing, dose, frequency as well as rationale of its intake across various sports disciplines and the time of competitive season. We are interested in athlete opinions about motives of supplements consumption and current practices. If they do not consume any supplements, they are also welcome to participate in this study, because the reasons why they do not take supplements are also of interest to us. The information we collect from this questionnaire will allow performance nutrition practitioners to identify opportunities for further education in the pursuit of optimal –peri-exercise nutrition, the eating occasions before, during and after athletic training, to maximize training adaptations.

We are recruiting Inter-county athletes between the age of 18 and 45 who are currently playing Football or Hurling for their County. Ethical approval has been received from the University of Limerick EHS Research Ethics Committee (EHS REC 2017_06_04_EHS) and all information collected in the survey is anonymous. The survey takes between 10-15 minutes to complete and can be accessed through the link below:
